The plague of the child marriages remains a problem in Iran. In a little city located in the Province of Hormozgan, in only one day and with a single ceremony, 50 juvenile couples have been married. The ceremony was organized directly by the local authority. All the couples were composed by students of the secondary schools. The Secretary of the Department for “Women’s Affairs”, said that the marriages were in line with the “Islamic customs and culture”. The parents of the students were all invited to the big ceremony.
In December 2014, the Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei published a decree, asking officials to remove obstacles to marriage and encourage larger families by assisting with childbirth costs and male infertility treatments (Bloomber Business). Last September, it was reported that over 40,000 girls under age 15 are married in Iran every year (Human Rights Iran).
